Winemaker Notes:
Our Iowa Foch Nouveau is a 100% Foch wine from our and neighboring vineyards. The earliest ripening sections of vineyards are used to produce Nouveau since the time period from harvest to bottling is only 10 weeks! Our Nouveau is produced following the method of Beajolais Nouveau production –namely, whole clusters are sealed in a carbon dioxide-saturated tank and the initial fermentation occurs because the cells of the grape berries are in an anaerobic environment and must ferment. The carbon dioxide and alcohol produced during this time breaks down the berries and that is why the process is called carbonic maceration. After 8 days the clusters are pressed and the juice inoculated with specific Nouveau wine-style yeast. The wine is stabilized and finished as soon as fermentation is completed. The resulting wine has a wonderful fresh fruit aroma, bursting with light, fruitful flavors. This is an exceptional style of wine for Foch grapes in the Upper Midwest and will be important in defining a regional identity for wines from the Upper Mississippi River Valley. We produce only 200 cases of Foch Nouveau annually and we sell out in early summer. Our Foch Nouveau is the first Iowa grown and produced wine to ever win a Double Gold Medal-Best of Class Award at an International Wine Competition!
